How to Help Kids Feel Secure about Adoption

Months, weeks, and even days leading up to our adoption, we can tell our kids felt insecure about it. They often brought up leaving or what would happen if the adoption did not occur. Emotions were high, and Bryce and I were tested countless times to see if we really did want to adopt our children. If we are honest here, we would question if it was right ourselves. In hopes of easing the tension we decided to work on a family project to help bring our family closer together.

I love music! I would never call myself a singer, but it fills my soul. I share this love of music with my children all the time! We are always singing and dancing. Well sometimes it is just me, while the others laugh, but most of the time I can get a few family member to join in!

Well for our project we talked about how we wanted to share our family story in song! I asked which song we should use and both kids agreed on “My House”, by Flo Rida. In one sitting, Bryce and I came up with the lyrics! Our family story actually went well with the song our kids picked!

As we shared the lyrics with our kids, Elijah immediately exclaimed he wanted to rap the introduction of the song! Isabel was eager to practice her dance moves to the music!

We spent the next couple of days practicing our song. The kids loved practicing and singing our song. Once we felt confident enough we recorded our song using garage band. I have to add that we are not professionals, and yes we made mistakes. We did not even record the song more than once, because after the first take all our kids got antsy. We took what we could get and we were all very proud of our song.

The next day, we recorded a few segments to make a music video to our song. We did these really quick one night, before the kids went to bed. On the theme of sharing our story, I gathered pictures and videos to support our song.

Once we had a finished product, we had a movie viewing as a family! The kids were so excited to see all the pictures and clips that were gathered from when they first entered our home. They loved our music video and enjoyed sharing it with family and friends.

Three simple tips to help kids feel secure about adoption:

  1. Work on a family project to share your adoption story. It does not have to be a song or music video. Maybe it is a picture book, secret family handshake, a poster, dance, a video announcement, or cake. Really the possibilities are endless. The key here is to include your child and their personality.
  2.  Make the project fun! Remember what the purpose is to the project – help your child feel secure about the upcoming adoption. If there are mistakes, go with it! Anytime we are working on a family project, I always share with my kids do not worry, because there is no way you can go wrong. Mistakes can always be fixed. Enjoy this time with your kids.
  3. Set aside time to work on the project, where you are not interrupted. This includes phone calls, work, and social media. The time set aside should be completely focused on bonding with your family.

Working on a family project, strengthened our family bonds. “Our House -Whitehead Style”, is our family’s favorite song. We often watch our music video and stop whatever we are doing to dance. Our babies will often stop crying or fussing, and starting laughing and dancing as soon as our song turns on.

Try these suggestions and let us know how they worked!

Here is our final product of our family project! Hope you all enjoy!

Our Lyrics

Open up your hearts yeah pop
Whitehead home come on turn it up!

Hear a knock on the door it’s our girly girl
We had never done this before , but you came on in
Came in all shy and went to bed
Before we knew it, you told us about your brother

Sometimes you gotta bend
and make a place for him to live
Yeah and spread this Whitehead love
Sometimes you gotta bend, bend

Welcome to our house
Babies in control now
We can’t even slow down
Here comes baby girl now

Welcome to our house,
Playing, laughing, crying loud
show me what you learned now
Here comes baby boy now

Welcome to our house
Welcome to our house

Morning comes and you shared you want to stay
Open up the blinds, its all ok
Make space for clothes, and open up the juice box
Prepare for adoption, come on, celebrate

Sometimes you gotta bend
and make a place for him to live
Yeah and spread this Whitehead love
Sometimes you gotta bend, bend

Welcome to our house
Babies in control now
We can’t even slow down
Here comes baby girl now

Welcome to our house,
Playing, laughing, crying loud
show me what you learned now
Here comes baby boy now

Welcome to our house
Welcome to our house

Welcome to our house, our crib, our spot, our pad
But our house is your house , If you got our back
Excuse us if its old
Tie up those shoe laces, you cant run that fast
Elijah, Neily, Ruthy, Brycen
Nuestro Raza es tu raza, so there aint no running back
Another kiss for mama, aint no running back
you know were pure class
So just chillax
